Is Water Pure?

Water is a simple molecule. Chemically it is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. However, the water you are consuming is most likely not pure water. Water can be contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides from agriculture, bacteria, chemical solvents and more. There are numerous filtration systems available on the market that can get rid of some or all of these harmful substances. One purification system uses the distillation process. This process can remove everything out of water, except certain volatile organic compounds. However, the biggest problem with distilled water is that it also removes all minerals.

Importance of Electrolytes

Some minerals are referred to as electrolytes. Examples of electrolytes are sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Electrolytes control osmosis of water between fluid compartments, help maintain pH balance, carry electrical current and serve as cofactors for activity of enzymes. Electrolytes are necessary for proper absorption of water. So just because you think you are drinking enough water does not mean your body is able to absorb it. Without electrolytes and an excess of water, overhydration can occur and the kidneys will excrete the excess water in the urine. Also, distillation can cause mineral deficiencies because the water will attract minerals already present in the body to balance with other body fluids. However, this may be a good thing in some cases. Distilled water is good at attracting toxins, so someone on a detoxification protocol may benefit.

Ways to Add Minerals

If you do drink distilled water, it is best to add minerals back in. Some easy ways to do this are by adding a pinch of unrefined sea salt or pink Himalayan salt to your water. A supplement to use instead is ConcenTrace Trace Mineral Drops by Trace Minerals. It contains the main electrolytes as well as other minerals our body needs in small amount to carry out daily functions. Also, eating whole foods naturally rich in minerals will help maintain a proper balance. Some of these foods include such as avocado, sweet potatoes, almonds and bananas.
